Overview
The second-generation Volkswagen Scirocco, introduced to the North American market for the 1982 model year, represented a significant departure from the Giugiaro-penned original. Designed in-house by Volkswagen, the new body style focused on improved aerodynamics, featuring a lower drag coefficient and a more rounded aesthetic while retaining the signature hatchback silhouette. By the mid-1980s, the model reached its performance peak with the introduction of the 16-valve engine, which arrived in the United States for the 1986 model year.
At the heart of the 16v variant was the high-revving 1.8-liter inline-four engine. This powerplant utilized a sophisticated dual-overhead-camshaft cylinder head, a notable upgrade over the 8-valve engines found in the standard Scirocco and the contemporary Golf GTI. This engine configuration allowed for significantly improved airflow and power output, positioning the Scirocco 16v as a serious contender in the entry-level sports coupe segment.
